Description:

This wonderful box has been painted by a talented Palekh artist, Marya Gurilyeva. Her works enjoy wide popularity among collectors all over the world. The subject is based on Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale "The Snow Queen". In the left part of the composition we can see Kay who is the adopted son of the Snow Queen while the right part of the composition depicts Kay together with his grandmother and Gerda.
The drawing is a rich sea of details. The interior of the room where the action takes place is formed with accurate brushwork that smoothly depicts the big window covered with frost patterns, a bird inside the cage, a cat and lots of rose bushes. Everything is in perfect harmony with each other.
Cold blue tones of tempera paints are used to paint the left part of the composition that symbolizes the cold reign of the Snow Queen while calm browns, oranges and greens are used to reproduce the right part of the composition that symbolizes warm human feelings and warmth of a family hearth. Gold and silver detailing outlines, highlights, and provides light in every element of the composition. The use of metallic paint is executed with precision and with an unbelievably steady hand that is able to paint with razor like thinness.
The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold and silver ornaments. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2010 and the village of Palekh.
