This elegant chain case (or pencil-box) is a creation of the talented artist Yekaterina Bykova from the village of Palekh. It shows the procession of various forest spirits, elves, dwarfs and sorceresses walking solemnly through the forest. They are committing some magic ritual that is so important that representatives of all forest spirits must take part in it.
The scene is beautifully painted in Bykova's recognizable style. Brilliant gold paint is used to detail the characters' costumes and some plants. The exterior of the piece imitates the color of marble (green blurry spots and veins are scattered against the black lacquered surface of the box's exterior). The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior Bykova has written Palekh, the title ("A Procession"), the fact that this work is an artistic variation, and her name, all in gold.
