Description:

This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Vladimir Bogdanov (born 1956) whose favorite themes to depict are folklore and genre scenes. This talented artist is a participant of various exhibitions since 1985. His works are kept in the Art Fund of Russian Federation.
The box features three scenes from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". Ivan returns to his native kingdom with the beautiful wife, and the magic firebird. His faithful friend, the Grey Wolf , carries them all on his back while jumping over the hills, the forests and the rivers.
The scene is nicely painted and filled with a great amount of minute details. The costumes of the characters and the architecture are detailed with bright gold paint. Silver powder is used to create a sparkle of the river. Gold and silver paint is also used to decorate the box's sides with luxuriant patterns.
The box's exterior is covered with black lacquer, and decorated with intricate gold and silver floral patterns. The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist name, date and Palekh.
