Yevgenia (Zhenya) Shatokhina is the artist who painted the composition on this box. This is a scene showing the Snowmaiden walking through the forest and caressing a deer. Light green and blue tones of tempera paints predominate here. Most of the fine detail is added with the use of gold and aluminum paint that touches every feature of the scene.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. Gold pattern accented with aluminum frames the scene on the lid. Highly intricate and complex scrollwork wraps around the sides of the box painted using gold and aluminum paint. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title "Snowmaiden",the year of 2006 and the village of Palekh.
