This is a classy piece of Palekh artistry created by the talented Alexey Zhiryakov. It is called "Sir Lancelot and Queen Greenevera", and shows a fragment from the book Le Morte Darthur (The Death of Arthur) written by English novelist Sir Thomas Malory (1405-1471). This book includes the stories about King Arthur and his Noble Knights of the Round Table.
The work is painted in bright colors against the black background. Gold is used to add details through out the scene.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. A lovely gold and aluminum ornamentation decorates the box's exterior. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
