Description:

This splendid box is the creation M. Lebedeva from the village of Palekh. In the center of the box there is the beautiful fairy-tale town, from the left and from the right from it the artist depicts two kind sorceresses who by means of their magic help people living in the town.
The palette is very simple, using green, white, brown, red, and light blue to define the action of this scene. Gold paints are used to paint the roofs of the buildings depicted in the center and each of the strange round roofs painted behind the backs of sorceresses. Gold and aluminum paints fill the scene with multiple of various details.
The scene is framed with tiny gold beads. The sides of the box are decorated with more complex ornamentation. It consists of two parallel strings of gold beads, and intricately painted gold and aluminum foliage patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed and dated (2005) by the artist.
