Description:

This captivating piece of charm has been created by established Palekh artist Vera Smirnova. The composition is pure storybook. The characters are extremely well detailed and the surrounding landscape is a bloom with precise contours and realistic texture. Smirnova really knows how to take command of a scene.
Smirnova is interested in the themes of fairy-tales. Her compositions depict many stories, including those that were written in the Western part of the world. Here, she has painted several scenes from the children's classic tale of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
In the left upper corner Smirnova has depicted the wicked Queen, the stepmother of Snow White. She looks at her magic mirror and asks if she is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. The mirror again and again repeats her that not she but Snow White is the most beautiful woman. The furious Queen sends once more her servant to kill Snow White. Meanwhile Snow White lives in the forest in the house of seven dwarfs. The central scene shows her laying supper, and all seven dwarfs who are ready to taste the food. In the right upper corner the Prince rides through the forest trying to find his beloved Snow White.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts like the background for the scene. This furthers the beauty of the composition tremendously. Using lustrous gold leaf, the artist has decorated the costumes of all the characters, some items of the crockery and the background in the right upper corner. Gold paints are also used to detail the scene.
The sides of the box are decorated with intricate gold foliage ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition. The box rests upon four legs. The work is signed, titled and dated (2006) by the artist in gold paints at the bottom of the composition.
