Description:

T. Yeryomina from the village of Palekh is the talented craftsman responsible for this exquisite box. It is dedicated to the creations of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Each of the box's sides is covered with the scenes from different tales written by Pushkin. Here we can see the fragments from such popular fairy-tales as the Golden Cockerel; Ruslan and Ludmila; the Fisherman and the Magic Fish; and the Tale of Tsar Saltan. Here we can come across such recognizable characters as Tsar Dadon and the Queen of Shemakha, the old fisherman with his greedy wife, thirty-three bogatyrs, Ruslan and Lyudmila, Tsar Saltan and his son, Prince Gvidon, and many others. The lid's composition features Alexander Pushkin writing his immortal creations under the famous oak. Here we can see also the characters of the Pushkin's introduction to the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" including the mermaid, the thirty three warriors with their uncle Chernomor, Baba-Yaga, Koshchey the Deathless and the Clever Black Cat.
The scenes are painted in the traditional Palekh style. The work includes more than forty-five human figures. Each character has his own individual features. Besides the human figures the composition is filled with detailed architecture, beautiful fairy-tale landscape and multitude of animals.
Green, red and brown tones dominate here. Gold is used with great intricacy and delicacy to develop the finer elements in the scene. Yeryomina paints with excellent detail here, combining a great deal into a small space without losing any clarity.
The exterior of the box is decorated with beautiful and complex gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. The artist signed her name, the village name of Palekh, and the year of 2006 at the bottom of the composition painted on the box's lid. Each scene is titled.
