Description:

Alexey Zhiryakov from the village of Palekh painted this brilliant work. It features the performance of Russian circus artists.
The box is originally designed. Clowns and jesters painted on the left and right sides of the composition hold the green hoop within the boundaries of which circus artists give their performance. The athlete lifts weight, the gymnasts show dangerous acrobatic feats, the jugglers juggle with multicolored balls, the bears dance and the funny monkey rides the horse. Multitude of golden dots painted around the artists symbolize sprinkled confetti. The clowns and jesters hold the sheets of paper with the following advertising announcements written on them: "Clowns and the fakir only in our circus! Monkeys and the magician! Jugglers, acrobats and gymnasts! The performance begins today at 6 p.m.!"
The composition is painted against the dark green background. Gold and aluminum are used to detail and highlight virtually every portion of the composition. This enhances the already lustrous palette and makes the scene sparkle from within.
The edges of the lid are decorated with elegant gold and aluminum ornamentation. The similar gold and aluminum ornamentation decorates the box's sides along with the bright miniatures of animals-artists showing various tricks and the pattern painted in the form of bright red and blue flags. The exterior of the box is dark green, while the interior is traditionally red.
The box is made out of paper-mache. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed and titled by A. Zhiryakov.
