Description:

This elegantly shaped box has been painted by Masha Lebedeva from the village of Palekh. It shows a scene from the fairy tale "Bremen Town Musicians" written by the Brothers Grimm. Four animals, a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster have grown too old to be useful to their masters. Because their masters want to get rid of them, they run away. They meet on the road and decide to go to Bremen-Town to be street musicians. Soon, they discover a cozy cabin occupied by robbers. The four friends have an idea and manage to scare the robbers away by making the loudest music they can. So, they can settle into a new home and take over the robbers' treasure.
Here we can see the moment when four friends arrange a concert for the inhabitants of Bremen Town. The composition is complex; it includes twelve human and animal figures. Each of them has an individual look, with well-defined features and detailed costumes. Gold and aluminum paints are used to fill the scene with minute details. Gold metal leaf shines through some areas of the scene such as the cock's coat, the bicycle, and the decoration of the stage.
The scene is framed with tiny gold beads, while the edges of the lid are decorated with elegant gold patterns. Complex gold and aluminum ornamentation decorate the box's sides as well as two parallel strings of gold and grey beads.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Palekh, and the year of 2004.
