Description:

This exquisite box has been painted by the talented Palekh artist Nina Suloeva, who has a distinct style among her painting peers. She does a wonderful job in coordinating very bright colors in small areas to burst with life and animation. She is also a good teacher, and her son Pavel is coming on strong with a style of his own as well.
The box shows several scenes from the Pushkin's "Tale of Tsar Saltan". The rounded scene painted in the left upper corner shows Prince Gvidon speaking to the Princess Swan in her animal form. The rounded scene painted in the right upper corner depicts Gvidon's mother admiring her son's rich island. The scene painted in the center features the happy end of the tale when the family reunited.
Each scene is drawn in the traditional Palekh style and richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints. The work is a good example of intricate Palekh art.
The box's exterior is richly decorated with intricate gold and aluminum floral ornamentation.
The box is constructed from papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2007.
