Description:

This is a fresh original work of the famous Palekh artist Yekaterina Meshkova (for a long time this artist has been working under the maiden name Bykova). It is painted in the style of surrealism characterized by having the elements of surprise, and unexpected juxtapositions within a work. Here Meshkova has depicted the quartet of musicians playing various musical instruments. The scene contains many elements of surprise including whimsically painted musicians, the huge cat and butterflies, the tree that grows right from the violoncello, and the fish that flies in the air. A wide range of colors has been used to paint the work; the details are enhanced with gold and silver paints.
The scene is framed with a gold line. The box's exterior imitates the coloring of a stone (light grey veins and blurry spots are scattered densely against the black lacquered surface). The interior is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior Meshkova has written her name, Palekh, the title (“Quartet”), the year of 2007, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
