Description:

This gorgeous box has been created by Roman Chibisov from the village of Palekh. This young talented artist represents the new generation of Palekh artists who will take the time-honored tradition of Russian art into the 21st century.
The box shows the Sea King sitting on his throne and contemplating his daughters, the beautiful mermaids, who swim merrily past him. The beauty of the underwater kingdom is vividly expressed here. Various species of fish, a turtle, water plants and corals are brilliantly painted with a lot of details. Shining gold and silver paints applied with a very thin brush fill the scene with a magic splendor.
The box's exterior is decorated with Chibisov's style signature ornaments painted over gold metal leaf inlay. These ornaments are enriched with the images of various sea creatures including an octopus (the box's front side), different fish (the box's left and right sides, and the lid), and a crayfish (the box's rear side) to correspond to the chosen theme.
The box is made of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
