Description:

This large box has been created by Vladimir Bogdanov. Vladimir was born in 1956. During 1976-1981 he studied in the Palekh Art School. Participant of various art exhibitions since 1985. His works are kept in the Art Fund of Russian Federation.
The work is called "Rus Bogatyrskaya", and features the famous Russian bogatyrs who are the characters of various ancient Russian legends. The box has four scenes around the body, one rectangular scene on the lid, and four scenes around the curved sides of the lid.
On the rectangular scene on the box's lid Bogdanov has painted the most famous and adorable bogatyrs riding their steeds: Ilya Muromets, Alyosha Popovich and Dobrynya Nikitich.
The right side of the box's exterior (including the lid's right side, and the box's right side) shows some episodes from the popular legend "Ilya Muromets and Nightingale the Robber". Here we can see the battle of Ilya Muromets and Nightingale the Robber (the lid's right side), and the final moment of the legend when Nightingale the Robber drinks a bowl of wine to regain his health, and to demonstrate Prince Vladimir the strength of his whistle (the box's right side).
The left side of the box's exterior (including the lid's left side, and the box's left side) depicts some moments from the ancient legend "Dobrynya Nikitich and the Dragon". The lid's left side features Dobrynya Nikitich killing the Dragon with his spear while on the box's left side we can see Dobrynya Nikitich who has released Prince Vladimir's niece, Zabava Putyatichna, from the dragon.
The rear side of the box's exterior (including the lid's rear side, and the box's rear side) features the scenes from the well-known legend "Volga and Mikula Selyaninovich". The lid's rear side shows Volga speaking to Mikula Selyaninovich who plows the field while on the box's rear side we can see Volga's soldiers who can't pull out Mikula's plow from the ground.
The front side of the box's exterior (including the lid's front side, and the box's front side) shows some episodes from the legend "Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin Zmeevich". Both the lid's front side and the box's front side depict the battle of Alyosha Popovich with Tugarin Zmeevich.
Each of the scenes is masterfully painted in bright tempera paints, and richly detailed with gold and silver paints. Gold and silver paints are also used to decorate the box's exterior with intricate floral patterns accompanied by tiny gold beads.
The box is constructed from high-grade papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2007.
