Description:

Veronika Chibisova is a talented Palekh artist who created this interesting work. His brilliantly painted works are always very bright as he likes to decorate them with the gold metal leaf inlay.
The box shows a scene from the fairy-tale "Krupenichka" written by Nikolay Teleshov. Krupenichka is a name of the beautiful girl, the only daughter of voevode (commander of army in ancient Russia) Vseslav. Because of her beauty Krupenichka was stolen by the khan's servants. In captivity she was offered to become one of the khan's wives. Fortunately Krupenichka's nanny, Varvarushka, saved the girl from captivity with the help of the old magician. The old magician and Krupenichka's nanny pretended to be the sellers of sweets, and managed to penetrate into the Tatar-Mongolian camp. By selling sweets they succeeded in distracting the attention of the guard, and the old magician had time to turn Krupenichka into a seed. When Varvarushka and the old magician reached the safe place, the old magician put the seed into the ground, and at that moment the girl, Krupenichka, appeared before her nanny.
Here we can see the moment of the tale when Krupenichka was stolen by the khan's three servants while she was gathering berries with her nanny in the forest. The scene is masterfully painted in Chibisov's signature style using a wide range of tempera paints. Brilliant gold paint is applied with a very thin brush to enhance various details. The box's exterior on the lid, and on the box's sides is decorated with complex and shining floral ornaments painted over gold metal leaf inlay.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene, and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2007, the title and the village of Palekh.
