Description:

This interesting work has been created by one of the leading Palekh artists Yekaterina Bykova. Yekaterina has elaborated her own individual manner of painting within the bounds of the traditional Palekh style. That is why it is always easy to recognize her unique boxes.
The box shows the procession of strolling actors crossing a street of a European town, and inviting its inhabitants to visit their show. The scene is nicely painted in a soft, sentimental style. Various shades of blue oils dominate here as the action takes place in winter. Gold and silver paints are used to enhance various details throughout the scene. The scene is framed with a gold line.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Its black lacquered exterior is covered with dark green veins to imitate marble; red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior Bykova has written Palekh, 2008, the title (“Circus”), the fact that this work is an artistic original, and her name, all in gold.
