Description:

This splendid box has been painted by Ye. Myznikov from the village of Palekh. The subject is based on the popular fairy-tale "The Fisherman and the Magic Fish", written in 1833 by A.S. Pushkin.
By painting the bright scenes on the whole surface of the box (except the box's exterior bottom), the painter has managed to convey almost the whole content of the tale within the limited space of the box.
On the box's lid we can see the fisherman and his wife sitting near a cracked washtub. The dug-out where they live is drawn in the background. It is the very beginning of the tale.
On the box's left side the artist has drawn the fisherman who has caught the magic fish. On the box's right side we can see the fisherman who speaks to the magic fish and asks to fulfill the wish of his wife. The box's front and rear sides show realization of his wife's wishes. On the box's front side we can see that the new cottage is built, but it isn't enough for the greedy wife, and she sends her husband to the magic fish again. Realization of the next wish is displayed on the box's rear side: the fisherman's wife has become a Tsaritsa, but it is enough for her again, and she sends her poor husband to ask the magic fish to make her the mistress of all the seas and oceans.
The shinning metal contours identify Myznikov as a real talent. Whether it is gold or aluminum paint, the highlights here are what set this piece apart. A reflective shine, one normally found within jewelry, has been developed throughout each scene. The characters' clothes contain great evidence of this. A true beauty has been completed.
The edges of the lid and the edges of the box's bottom part are decorated with gold scrolling patterns. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to complete the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on two legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Palekh.
