Description:

This entrancing artistry was composed by the talented Roman Chibisov from the village of Palekh. This presentation is a spectacle for the eyes. Lavish decoration compliments the full bloom of radiant colors applied.
Bright egg-tempera paints have been used to compose this scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale “Three Kingdoms”. In the beginning of this tale Tsaritsa Nastasya the Golden Braid is kidnapped by the horrible monster Whirlwind. The Tsar's elder sons, Vasiliy and Piotr, leave the kingdom in the hope of finding their mother. But they disappear too. Then the Tsar's younger son, Ivan Tsarevich, sets out in search of his mother and brothers. He passes many kingdoms and at last comes to the Glass Mountain. Under the mountain he finds his brothers. The brothers tell him that their mother lives somewhere on the mountain but they can't climb up the mountain because it is glassy and slippery. Ivan Tsarevich manages to climb up the mountain and finds there the Copper Palace. The Tsaritsa of the Copper Kingdom lives in this palace. Like Ivan's mother she is a captive of the horrible monster Whirlwind. She doesn't know where Ivan's mother is, and sends him to her middle sister who lives in the Silver Palace. She is the Tsaritsa of the Silver Kingdom who is also a captive of the Whirlwind. She doesn't know where Ivan's mother is, and sends him to her sister, Elena the Beautiful, who lives in the Golden Palace. Elena the Beautiful is the Tsaritsa of the Golden Kingdom. She says Ivan that his mother is in the Pearl Kingdom, and asks to save her from the Whirlwind's captivity. She is so beautiful that Ivan falls in love with her at first sight. Ivan goes to the Pearl Kingdom, kills the Whirlwind, and saves his mother. Then he comes back to all three kingdoms to take the tsaritsas away from the Glass Mountain. In the end of this interesting tale Ivan Tsarevich marries Elena the Beautiful, who is the Tsaritsa of the Golden Kingdom, Piotr Tsarevich marries the Tsaritsa of the Silver Kingdom and Vasiliy Tsarevich marries the Tsaritsa of the Copper Kingdom.
The box shows the moment of the tale when Ivan helps the tsaritsas to descend from the Glass Mountain. Each of them holds her kingdom in her hands. The scene is painted in Chibisov's signature style over the shining gold metal leaf inlay. Brilliant gold paint is applied with a very thin brush to enhance various details.
