Vera Bolshakova is the talented artist who painted this gorgeous icon on the lacquer box. The depicted icon is called “Virgin the Unfading Flower”. It is a fine and seldom encountered icon. The name “Unfading Flower” is related to various hymns dedicated to Maria. The Virgin holds the flower that is a symbol of purity, to the right of her the Infant Christ is depicted.
The icon is drawn in bright tempera paints, and richly detailed with gold paint. Gold paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with luxuriant floral ornaments that suit perfectly to the chosen theme.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the icon, and the box rests on four legs. Signed with the artist's name, the village of Palekh and the year of 2008.
