This luxuriant pencil box is a wonderful creation of the talented Palekh artist Veronika Chibisova. The whole surface of the pencil box's exterior shines brightly with gold. To achieve this effect the artist has painted the intricate floral pattern in black tempera paints over a shining gold metal leaf inlay. This exquisite floral pattern is completed with the brilliantly painted images of exotic birds drawn over light blue background. The black lacquered surface of the pencil box's exterior is apparent on the sides and patricianly on the exterior bottom. The interior of the piece is covered with red lacquer.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist's name.
