Roman Chibisov is the author of this splendid box. In the middle of the composition he has painted Yelena the Wise who is a main character of various Russian fairy-tales, for instance, the fairy-tale “Yelena the Wise”. Yelena the Wise is drawn here sitting on her throne, and leaning her elbows on the magic book. All around her various people of her kingdom are gathered.
The drawing is a rich sea of details. The artist pays great attention to the expressive faces of all characters (there are eight human figures), and to their costumes, drawing countless folds and ornaments. Brilliant gold and silver paints are applied with a very thin brush to enhance various details. The scrolls that decorate the upper and bottom parts of the composition shine with gold metal leaf inlay.
The ornamentation of the box is astonishing. The box's sides are decorated with rich and very intricate gold floral patterns. In the middle of each side there is a sumptuous ornament drawn in black paints over a brilliant gold metal leaf inlay. Each ornament is differently designed; these ornaments repeat the forms of fantastic flowers, fish and birds.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2008, the title (“Yelena the Wise”), and the village of Palekh.
