Description:

The exceptional talent of Vera Smirnova is used to paint this scene from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Alice in Wonderland". In the middle of the composition we can see Alice holding a flamingo that is used as a mallet in the game of croquet. Above her head the Cheshire Cat lies on a branch of the big tree. From the right of Alice the artist has drawn the tea party in the Hat's house. On the left of the Cheshire Cat we can see the Caterpillar who smokes the hookah sitting on the big mushroom. The left upper corner shows the magnificent palace of the Wonderland while the right upper corner depicts the Mock Turtle and the Gryphon. In the left bottom corner we can see the violent Queen of Hearts who orders to chop off the gardeners' heads to her soldiers. On the left of Alice the artist has drawn the White Rabbit who hastens to meet with the Duchess.
The composition is painted in Smirnova's recognizable style. The details are thoroughly contoured with bright gold and aluminum paint. This builds radiance and texture, both at the same time. Gold metal leaf inlay is used to decorate the costumes of some characters.
The box's sides (except the front side) are adorned with a nice gold leafy pattern. On the front side Smirnova has masterfully painted wild flowers using gold and aluminum paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior Smirnova has written her name, Palekh, and the title.
