Description:

This is a glamorous work that exudes fairy-tale charisma. It is an encyclopedia of quality. The ornamentation is lustrous treasure, surrounding the colors and playing with them. Fascinating. This is the work of Palekh artist Veronika Chibisova.
The box shows an episode from the humorous Russian fairy-tale of, "The Three Sons-in-Law". The basis gist of the tale is that the daughters of an old man are wedded off to "The Moon", "The Sun" and "The Wind" because of the help that they give him. In time, the man visits his daughters, and is again helped by little miracles from the three Sons-in-Law. But when he tries to duplicate the miracles at home, he is quite unsuccessful. Here the talented Chibisova shows us all three daughters of the old man, and also the Wind, symbolized as a handsome winged man, who is the husband of the youngest daughter.
The composition is filled with vivid colors, beautiful images, rich gold and aluminum detailing, and a high level of intricacy. The characters' clothes, the leaves of the trees and plants, the birds and the flowers have been contoured consistently to develop their luster and texture. This is a very advanced piece of Russian lacquer artistry that can be enjoyed for several years to come.
The edges of the lid are decorated with elegant and very intricate floral ornamentation painted both in gold and aluminum. The box's sides are adorned with luxuriant floral patterns painted over gold metal leaf inlay, and accented with light blue tempera paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2008 and the village of Palekh.
