Description:

This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Olga Terentyeva. It shows a scene from the popular Russian fairy-tale “Princess Frog”. The old Tsar tells Ivan and his brothers to shoot an arrow blindfolded, into a random direction to find a wife. The arrows of Ivan's brothers land near the houses of the rich and beautiful maidens. Ivan Tsarevich's arrow lands in the swamp near the frog, and Ivan is destined to marry it.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior of the box also acts as the background for the compositions. This adds an overwhelming clarity to the work. The artist uses gold and aluminum to highlight and texture considerable portions of the artistry.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The scene is framed with gold beads while the box's sides are decorated with an intricate gold scroll pattern. The box has a hinge from the top of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Palekh.
