Description:

This large box has been created by Dmitry Ogir from the village of Palekh. In this work he has painted a gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice in Wonderland". In the center of the composition we can see Alice reading a book and the White Rabbit who hastens to meet with the Duchess. A little above the Cheshire Cat sits on the tree. The left upper corner depicts a tea party in Hatter's house while the right upper corner shows Alice speaking with the Caterpillar. In the right bottom corner the artist has painted the Queen's soldiers that look like ordinary cards and in the left bottom corner he has depicted the Gryphon coming ashore.
Green and blue tones of tempera paints predominate here. The details are richly enhanced with lustrous gold and silver paint. The composition is decorated with a nice gold rolling pattern. The box's sides are adorned with luxuriant foliage pattern painted in gold and aluminum that is accompanied by the images of playing cards painted over the gold metal leaf inlay.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four rounded feet. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
