Description:

Chibisova Veronika is the artist who painted the scene on this box. Here she has chosen to depict a moment from the engaging tale of Marya Morevna. In this tale Marya Morevna (she is depicted in the right part of the composition) is kidnapped by Koshchey the Deathless, and her husband, Ivan Tsarevich, sets out in search of her. Ivan understands that Koshchey the Deathless is a very strong magician, and asks the forest witch, Baba-Yaga, to give him a piece of good advice (this moment is depicted at the bottom of the scene). With the help of Baba-Yaga Ivan defeats Koshchey and saves his beloved wife. In the upper part of the composition we can see a beautiful moment of the tale that depicts Ivan crossing the River of Fire...unharmed!
The colors are exceptionally bright and the palette is very diverse. The artist has managed to create an exquisite composition with ultra-fine detail, and good transitions between the scenes. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add further detail to the composition. The detailing with the metallic paints is so fine, in fact, that a brush with no more than a single hair was used in many areas.
The scene is framed with an intricate gold floral pattern painted against the blue background. The box's sides are decorated with a luxuriant gold floral pattern painted over gold metal leaf inlay, and accented with bright green and white tempera paints.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition, and rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, Palekh and the yea of 2008.
