Description:

This large, Palekh box has been painted by Marya Novikova. It shows a scene from Pushkin's "Tale of Tsar Saltan". In the center of the composition she depicts Princess Swan. From the left of her we can see Tsar Saltan, and from the right of her Prince Gvidon and his mother are depicted. The left part of the composition shows the thirty-three knights with their uncle old Chernomor, rising from the raging sea while the right part of the composition depict the magic squirrel.
The drawing is colorful and filled with intricate details. Bright red, orange, yellow, and blue color patches seem to be brighter against the black background. The detail is added with gold and silver paint.
The box is constructed from papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior. The exterior is decorated with very intricate gold patterns. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2008, and the village of Palekh.
