This exciting composition was created by the talented Vera Smirnova from the village of Palekh. Fantasy was the basis for the palette and it has been applied with a skilled hand. A culmination moment from tale entitled, "The Mermaid," has been depicted here. The abandoned and miserable mermaid retreats hastily from the Prince's wedding. The scene is expressive and aesthetically pleasing, both at the same time.
The scene is masterfully painted in Vera Smirnova's signature style. The colors are bright and radiant. Green, blue and red tones of tempera paints predominate here. A thick layer of lustrous gold paint enlivens an already eclectic palette.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2009.
