This exquisite set of Palekh lacquer miniature art is a creation of Nina Suloeva. Nina Suloeva was born in 1948. During 1967-1972 she studied in the Palekh Art School. Since 1972 she has been working in the Palekh workshops. Suloeva is a good teacher of lacquer miniature art, and her son Pavel is also a talented Palekh artist.
The set includes seven boxes that rest on the round shaped tray. Four of seven boxes including the central box are attached to the tray whereas another three of them can be easily moved away from the tray. The set looks like a daisy and each of its petals is a box.
The work is called “Maslenitsa”, and on the lid of each box Suloeva has painted some traditional folk customs connected with this spring festival. Here we can see burning of a woman of straw that embodies the winter, baking of sacrificial bread - pancakes, dressing masquerades, various games, driving in a sledge at high speed and many others. Each scene is painted in bright tempera paints and richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints.
The set is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the set is covered with black lacquer while the interior of each box is covered with red lacquer. The exterior of the set is decorated with intricate gold ornaments accented with aluminum. The lid of each box is hinged except the lid of the central box. The tray rests on three legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title, and the year of 2009.
