Description:

Roman Chibisov from the village of Palekh is the author of this breathtaking box. Here the artist has painted some episodes from Lewis Carroll's (1832-1898) classic tale “Through the Looking Glass”.
In the foreground we can see Alice playing with the kitten inside her house. Over the fireplace we can see the looking glass. Through this looking glass Alice penetrated into the magic chess land located on the other side of a mirror. Near the fireplace the artist has painted several magic flowers described in the beginning of the tale. In the background we can see the White Queen and the Red Queen having a dinner.
The composition is drawn in bright tempera paints and neatly detailed with bright gold and silver paint. The box's sides are decorated with a rich floral pattern painted over shining gold metal leaf inlay. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests legs.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Palekh.
