Description:

This magnificent box has been painted by the famous Palekh artist, Vladimir Bogdanov. The work is based on Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale "The Snow Queen".
The large box displays nine masterfully painted scenes. It has four extensive paintings around the body, one rectangular composition on the lid's top, and four scenes that run around the curved sides of the lid.
The box's front side shows the beginning of the tale: Kai, and Gerda live next door to each other in the garrets of buildings with adjoining roofs in a large city. On the lid's front curved side we can see a moment when the Snow Queen kidnaps Kay and carries him to her ice kingdom. The lid's left curved side shows Gerda starting to look for Kai; her boat approaches the house of an old sorceress. On the box's left side we can see the prince and the princess saying goodbye to Gerda while the box's rear side depicts Gerda sitting inside the rich coach presented her by the kind prince and princess. The box's right side features Gerda's conversation with the robber girl. On the lid's right curved side we can see Gerda's travelling to north riding the brave and noble reindeer while the lid's rear curved side depicts Gerda leaving the Lapp woman's home with the letter addressed to the Finn woman written on the fish. The rectangular composition on the lid's top shows Kai playing with ice toys in the palace of the Snow Queen.
The palette is bright, and filled with a rich spectrum of tempera paints. The black background provides separation of the sky and earth. Gold and aluminum paint details each scene and fills it with a magic sparkle.
The box is constructed from papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with gold leafy patterns completed silver flowers. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Palekh.
