This neatly painted box is a creation of Olga Tsyganova from the village of Palekh. It depicts several scenes from the Russian fairy-tale "The Firebird". In this tale the Firebird stole the golden apples from the tsar's garden. Ivan Tsarevich was sent to catch the thief. With the help of Baba-Yaga Ivan managed to steal the firebird, to kill the awful dragon and to save the beautiful maiden. In the end of the tale Ivan returned to his native kingdom with the young wife.
The composition is painted in bright tempera paints and richly detailed with lustrous gold paint. Gold has been also used by the artist to decorate the edges of the lid with a simple pattern composed of small beads. More complex gold floral design can be found wrapping around the box's sides, this pattern is painted in gold and accented in aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2010.
