Description:

This is a handcrafted beauty by established Palekh painter Alexey Zhiryakov. Alexey comes from the famous family of Palekh artist. His father, Yugeniy Zhiryakov, mother, Galina Zhiryakova, and brother, Andrey, are prominent Palekh artists.
The painting is based on the popular story of, "The Sleeping Beauty." This story was originally put to pen by French writer Charles Perrault in 1696. Here we can see the clue moment from this story when the aged, neglected fairy tells her dreadful prophecy over the little princess; realization of this prophecy - the princess pricks her finger with the spindle and falls into a profound slumber together with all her kingdom.
The composition is painted on the projecting platform with cutaway angles. The scene is painted in Zhiryakov's recognizable style using bright tempera paints. Additions of gold and aluminum highlights fully contour the entire composition. Not only does this bring out the colors in the palette, but it enhances perspective and builds texture.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The edges of the lid are decorated with gorgeous floral pattern. The same floral pattern painted against the bright red background can be found wrapping around the box's sides. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is entitled on the box's rear side while the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2010 are written at the bottom of the composition.
