Description:

This exquisite work is a creation of Alexey Zhiryakov from the village of Palekh. Alexey comes from the famous family of Palekh artists. His father, Yugeniy Zhiryakov, and mother, Galina Zhiryakova were the leading Palekh artists during the Soviet Union epoch. His brother, Andrey, is also a very talented artist whose works were displayed on our website.
The work painted on the mythical theme is called "Faun and Nymphs". In the center of the composition we can see Faun playing the flute. Faun is a rustic forest god of Roman mythology often associated with Greek satyrs and the Greek god Pan. Faun is a half human - half goat. Romans believed fauns inspired fear in men traveling in lonely, remote or wild places but were also capable of guiding humans in need.
Faun is surrounded with nymphs listening to his tune with admiration. Different from gods, nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young maidens who love to dance and sing.
The composition is splendidly painted in various tones of tempera paints. Gold and aluminum are used to detail and highlight virtually every portion of the composition. This enhances the palette and makes the scene sparkle.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box's sides are decorated with nice gold and silver patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title and the year of 2010.
