This traditional Palekh box was painted by the talented artist Sergey Kamanin.
It depicts a scene from the Russian fairy-tale of a Golden Rooster.
Red and green tones dominate here. The artist uses these colors as a basis for creating a scene that reflects the bucolic nature of the setting. Each element of the composition is detailed using gold or aluminum paint. The use of gold and aluminum is done with great skill and attention to detail!
Gold beads decorate the edges of the lid and the bottom border of the box. The sides of the box are adorned with beautiful gold floral ornamentation.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests flat. It is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Palekh, and the year of 1990.
