Bright golden bead work is used to frame the lid's composition and to decorate the sides of the base.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition. The artist wrote his name, the village name of Palekh, and the year of 1996 at the bottom of the box.
