Description:

This elegant box has been painted by a well-known master Masha Lebedeva from the village of Palekh. It shows a scene from life of upper society in 19th century in Russia.
We can see several scenes, like windows, in each of them we can see different characters. Each of characters has an individual look, with well-defined features and detailed costumes. Gold and aluminum paints are used to fill the scene with minute details. Two scenes that are above on the left on and on the right are showing us the musicians. The main (in the middle of the composition) scene is showing dancing people. On the lower left scene we can see flirting girls with a cavalier and right lower scene gentlemen are playing cards.
The scene is framed with tiny gold beads, while the edges of the lid are decorated with elegant gold patterns. Complex gold ornamentation decorate the box's sides as well as a string of gold and gray beads.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests flat. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Palekh, and the year of 2006.
