Description:

This large box with several compartments was painted by Natalie Varzina.
The set includes seven compartments that rest on the round shaped tray. Six of the seven lids are openning while the central lid can be easily moved away from the tray. The set looks like a daisy and each of its petals is a compartment.
It shows several scenes from the popular Russian fairy-tale "By the Pike's Will" or "Emelya and the magic Pike".
On one of them we can see how Emelya is catching the magic Pike by a buckle, to the right, Tsar is drinking tea with her daghter. On the next one the stove is moving with Emelya and Tsarina. On the next one- the horseless sledge that are moving (by the pike's will) with Emelya and amazed the villagers . On the next one- the guards from Tsar came to bring Emelya to the Palace, but Emelya said that it is cold outside and decide to go to Tsar on the Stove...So the stove is moving (by the Pike's will) and Emelya sit on it...no horse or cart!!! On the last lid we can see a family of amazed villagers. the lid in the center shows a snow covered village...
Lot's of white and gray tones are contrasting here with reds, blues and green colors and showing us a beauty of winter time. The painting is made over the leaves of gold, glued to the surfaces of ALL seven lids. This add rich luminescence and delicacy to the piece.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold leafy patterns.
The box is constructed from cardboard ,paper-mache and pressed paper.
Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box rests on the three legs. The composition is signed with the artist name, and the village of Palekh in gold paint.
