Description:

This exquisite Palekh box is a creation of Yugeniy Myznkov. Yugeniy was born in 1959. He comes from the family of artists. He is the son of known Palekh artis Genady Myznikov. During 1974-1979 he studied in the Palekh Art School. His favorite scenes to depict are folklore and genre scenes.
The box features several scenes from the popular Russian story entitled, "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". On the box's sides the artist has painted Prince Gvidon and his wife, Princess Swan, meeting Tsar Saltan who approaches the magic island on board of his sailboat. The island is defended by the thirty-three Warriors of the Sea that are also depicted here. The box's lid shows the conversation of Prince Gvidon and the enchanted white swan.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with elaborate gold ornaments accented with silver paint. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, and the village of Palekh.
