This purse-shaped box has been painted on both of it's sides by an established Palekh artist, Nikolaev Alexander.
It shows happy Russian peasants enjoying a frosty, winter day. On a one side of the box we can see a young girl went out for a water with buckles on a shoulder-yoke and a guy is trying to talk to her. On the other side another a family of Dad and Mom and a girl are making a snowman. On the background of both of the compositions we can see the village houses with smoking chimneys and snowy landscapes.
The palette is filled with various shades of cold whites and blues colours suitable for the reproduction of a winter landscape. The characters' costumes are painted in warm red, orange and brown tones. Painting human figures in bright, festive colors is a recognizable trait of the traditional style of Palekh lacquered miniature.
The paintings of both of the sides are framed with a golden dot ornaments; sides of the box are decorated with intricate flower pattern painted in gold.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box.
The parts of the box are hinged, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
