This purse-shaped box has been painted by a well-known Palekh artist, Nikolaev Alexander. On this box the painting is made on the both sides
The depicted scenes are from the popular fairy-tale of, "The Sleeping Princess".
This story was originally put to pen by French writer Charles Perrault when he published his collection of fairy tales "Stories of Olden Times" in 1697. The French title of the tale was "La belle au bois dormant," which means "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood." The story has since been adopted into various versions in the many countries of the world; in Russia it is known as Sleeping Princess written by A.S. Pushkin. Here we can see the main characters of this fairy-tale: the Sleeping Princess and the Prince who hastens to wake her up.
On a one side of the box we can see a Prince on a horse, asking help to find a way from the Sun and the Moon. On the other side Prince is kissing the Princess and she got up from sleep.
The palette is filled with various shades of red, green and blue colours. Painting human figures in bright, festive colors is a recognizable trait of the traditional style of Palekh lacquered miniature.
The paitings are framed with the golden dot ornaments; both of the sides are decorated with intricate flower pattern painted in gold.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box.
The parts of the box are attached to each other with a hinge, and the box rests flat. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
