Description:

It's well known that Ermak Timofeevich was a professional warrior; an experienced military leader, he defended the Southern frontiers of Russia for twenty years and headed the troops sent to the Dikoe Pole ("Wild Field") for repulsion of the Tatar raids. During the Levonskaya War (1558-1583) he was one of the most famous Cossack commanders. He was the conqueror of Sibirya. Owing to the joining of Siberia, Russia gained access to countless number of treasures of the soil that afterwards supplied the entire country. Beyond the Urals the deposits of kitchen salt, non-ferrous metal, silver and precious stones were found, all in great measure due to the efforts of Ermak Timofeevich.
Sergey Deviatkin of Kholuy painted this powerful scene. The palette shows a boldly colored sea and warriors painted in warm tones. Swans envelope the bottom of the composition, and match the movement of the water as if they were moving the ship. The ship is decorated with wonderful gold patterns, the likes of which only Sergey Deviatkin knows how to make. The brushwork gives the scene an animated quality that is invigorating and lovely to look at.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation with aluminum accents frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four round feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, village, year (2004) and title ("Ermarmak's Swans").
