Description:

This is definitely a quality work from a talented Kholuy artist. Dobrin has created multiple original works, including this one. The subject of the composition is based on the Pushkin's fairy tale "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". It is the traditional Russian tale of a king and his son who become separated due to the jealous interference of two wicked stepsisters. With the help of the Swan Princess, they are finally reunited after years of separation. And, of course, everyone lives happily ever after! The box shows the final scene of this legendary tale: the sumptuous feast is arranged to celebrate the reunion of the family and all people living in the Gvidon's magic island are gathered to raise their glasses to this joyous occasion.
Dobrin paints with a unique style, incorporating varied color shades, and layered textures. The drawing is quite fine, with small details in the characters' faces and costumes, some architecture and the landscape. The figures show the influence of icon art, with their stylized appearance and slightly elongated figures. Each of the characters has an individual look, with well-defined features and detailed costumes. Green, yellow-reds and violet are used extensively, three of Dobrin's favorite palette colors. The scenes are richly enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the box. The composition is framed with a glorious leafed and flowered filigree pattern painted gold and accented with emerald tempera paints and aluminum. This same style of ornamentation is repeated on the sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box sits flat. Dobrin has signed, dated (2003) and titled the composition on the lid. Inside the lid, he has again provided the title, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
