Description:

This magnificent box was created by the talented husband and wife duo of Yevgeniy and Svetlana Vlasov from the village of Kholui. Here they have chosen to depict the romantic symbolism associated with the timeless classic, "Scarlet Flower" that is very similar to that of the American tale "The Beauty and the Beast". A beautiful girl is trapped inside a beast's home, because she has no choice, and the beast is afraid to show himself due to his appearance. The beast lives in fear of not being loved by the girl, but she truly loves him. In the end the beast turns into the handsome prince and marries the girl.
The box features several scenes from this tale, and you can easily remember its plot. In the right bottom corner the girl's father sails on board the merchant ship. At the top of the ship's masts the Russian flags are streaming in the wind. A little below there is the scene showing the beast hiding behind the bushes as he doesn't want the girl see him. In the bottom right corner the merchant has brought his daughters the presents. The older sisters try on the smart clothes, while the youngest one holds the magic scarlet flower in her hands. In the left upper corner the merchant tells his daughters about his adventures. In the bottom part of the composition, in the middle the beast admires his scarlet flower. In the left part of the composition, in the middle the merchant looks at the scarlet flower that grows in the beast's garden and decides to steal it. In the left bottom corner the beast turns into the handsome prince. In the middle of the composition the artist depicts the wedding of the prince (the former beast) and the girl.
The scene has subtle, realistic blending of shade and color, almost like an oil painting. The strokes are fine and precise. Nature driven tones dominate the landscape. Fine golden and aluminum contours makes the details all the more amazing.
Beautiful gold and aluminum filigree patterns frame the scene, while the sides of the box are decorated with intricate gold filigree designs accented with blue, green and red tempera paints.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. A beautiful inscription has been added to the interior of the lid. It offers the piece as an authors' original design, the authors' names, a list of materials used, the title, the village name of Kholuy and the year of 2005 of which the piece was finished. This writing, in gold, is framed by an entrancing golden scene featuring the village and the scarlet flower.
