Description:

Sergey Deviatkin, an extremely skilled Kholuy artist, has created this masterful work. It is called "Golden Domed Moscow", and features a troika (a carriage or sled pulled by three horses, with troika meaning three) racing by the Red Square. In the middle of the composition, a little above the troika, the artist depicts the famous St. Basil's Cathedral built by the order of Ivan the Terrible in honor of the Kazan's conquest. In the background some of the Moscow Kremlin's white stone cathedrals are depicted.
The troika and the architecture, except the St. Basil's Cathedral (it is painted in red tones) are painted in cream tones, while the snow is painted in beautiful blue-greenish tones. Gold paint is used to detail the architecture, the horses' harness, and also to decorate the sledge.
Masterfully painted gold filigree beautifully frames the scene, and also decorates the box's sides. Such a rich ornamentation is typical for all Devyatkin's boxes. In the left upper corner of the composition the artist writes "Moscow" in gold paints, while at the bottom of the composition, in the middle, he write the title of the composition also in gold.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Kholui.
Sergey past away on the 10th of July 2005. This is one of the last his works.
