Description:

This beautiful box of museum quality was painted by Yevgeniy Dobrin from Kholui. The artist has chosen to depict a scene from the popular story of, "The Sleeping Princess." This story was originally put to pen by French writer Charles Perrault when he published his collection of fairy tales "Stories of Olden Times" in 1697. The French title of the tale was "La belle au bois dormant," which means "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood." The story has since been adopted into various versions in the many countries of the world; in Russia it is known as "Sleeping Princess and Seven Bogatyrs" written by A.S. Pushkin.
In the story a princess is born who becomes the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. Because of this, an evil queen's magic plate tells the queen that someone else is now the most beautiful person in the kingdom. The queen orders that the princess be taken to the forest to be killed, but ends up at the Seven Bogatyrs' cabin where she lives until she is put into an eternal sleep after eating one of the queen's apples. She would not be saved until Prince Yelisey finds her and they live happily ever after.
In the middle of the composition the artist depicts seven bogatyrs who sheltered the Princess and became her sworn brothers. In the left bottom corner there is the main heroine of the fairy tale, the young Princess who surpassed the wicked Queen in beauty. She bids her farewell to her sworn brothers who ride away for hunting. In right upper corner Prince Yelisey asks the Sun where he can find his beloved Princess.
The coloring of the box is very beautiful. It is based on successful combination of contrast emerald green and reddish tones. Gold paint is used to detail the characters' clothes, the architecture and some of the trees.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the box. The composition is framed with a glorious leafed and flowered filigree pattern painted gold and accented with aluminum. This same style of ornamentation is repeated on the sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Kholui. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box sits flat. Dobrin has signed, dated (2005) and titled the composition on the lid. Inside the lid, he has again provided the title, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
