Description:

This is another masterpiece of the prominent Kholui artist Yugeniy Dobrin. It is called "Blessing of Alexander Nevsky on a Feat of Arms". Here we can see one of the most honored Russian saints, the protector of Russian warriors, Alexander Nevsky (1252-1263) giving his blessing over the small boy. Later this boy will become the Prince of ancient Rus, Dmitry Donskoy (1363-1389). Dmitry Donskoy is a famous figure in the Russian history. He is known like the brilliant commander, under the leadership of whom the Russians defeated the Tatars in the battle that took place in the Kulikovo Field.
Dobrin paints with a unique style, incorporating varied color shades, and layered textures. The drawing is quite fine, with small details in the characters' faces and costumes, some architecture and the landscape. The figures show the influence of icon art, with their stylized appearance and slightly elongated figures. Each of the characters has an individual look, with well-defined features and detailed costumes. The scene is richly enhanced with gold and aluminum metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the box. The composition is framed with a glorious leafed and flowered filigree pattern painted gold and accented with emerald tempera paints and aluminum. This same style of ornamentation is repeated on the sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, titled ("Blessing") and dated (2006) by the artist at the bottom of the composition. Inside the lid, Dobrin has again provided the title, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
