Description:

This is definitely a quality work from a talented Kholuy artist. Dobrin has created multiple original works, including this one. The box depicts a scene from the Pushkin's fairy-tale "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". Prince Gvidon embraces the Princess Swan and shows her the ship on the board of which his father is sailing. Tsar Saltan will see in this fairy island many wonders: the squirrel that all day long shells golden nuts, the thirty-three knights with their uncle old Chernomor, rising from the raging sea, and, certainly, he will be very surprised to meet there his beloved wife and son.
The palette is based on contrast colors. The characters are painted in various shades of brown, orange and red, whereas the surrounding landscape is painted in contrast green tones. Gold is used to fill the scene with various details.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the exterior of the box. A string of gold beads completed with intricate scroll designs in each corner of the box frame the composition. The box's sides are decorated with intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation that runs parallel to another string of gold beads.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed, and titled by the artist at the bottom the scene. On the lid's interior you can find the confirmation that this box is the artist's original work, the artist's signature, the artist's name, the year of 2004, and the title.
