This attractive Kholui box has been painted by O. Fedorova. It shows the Forest Man speaking with the children. The Forest Man is a forest spirit who keeps the forest and knows everything about animals, herbs and plants. The children have gathered the full basket of mushroom, and now they ask the Forest Man to tell them more about each mushroom.
Orange, brown and green tones dominate here. The details are enhanced tremendously by the golden and aluminum contours. Besides three human figures the composition also includes images of various animals: squirrels, a bear, a deer, cats, hedgehogs, and birds.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box. The interior is covered with red velvety material. A hinge is fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed, and titled ("Forest Man") by the artist.
