Description:

Mikhail Komarov from the village of Kholui created this bright box. It features the ancient Russian town of Kineshma.
The town was founded as a fortress on the river of Volga where smaller rivers - Kineshemka and Kazoha - flew into it. Kineshma was first mentioned in 1429 because of tatar khan invading. Even in that time the town was already famous for its fishing. It supplied the Russian tzar table with fish. In the 16th century trade, industry and handicraft started to develop there. Kineshma became one of the most important points on the Volga river trade way. By the 18th century textile is the main business there.
There are many interesting historic places in Kineshma. It is well known for famous people who lived in Kineshma or visited this beautiful town, such as the dramatist A. Ostrovsky, the writer A. Potekhin, the doctor of medicine V. Nogorsky, the economist N. Kondratyev, the composer A. Borodin (in Kineshma he wrote music to the famous opera "Prince Igor"), and many others.
At present time Kineshma is the second town in the Ivanovo region after the town of Ivanovo according to its size.
The artist has used the unusual red background for the winter scene. The box's exterior and interior are covered with red lacquer. It is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. Signed and titled by the artist.
